The A2 birdcage flash hider is the mil-spec standard muzzle device for the M16/M4 family, designed primarily to disperse the muzzle flash signature to the sides and downward rather than forward and upward. At $8.99 it is effectively a disposable component that provides the minimal legal muzzle device requirement for a 16-inch rifle. The three-prong, closed-bottom design was developed to avoid disturbing ground cover when firing from the prone position. While it offers minimal recoil reduction — that's not its design goal — it does reduce the visible flash signature in low-light conditions more effectively than a bare muzzle. Install with a standard crush washer and torque to 15-20 ft-lbs.
